A senior Lagos State government official has raised serious concerns about water safety in Lekki, warning that residents who drill boreholes in the area may be unknowingly consuming contaminated water.
Mohammood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary in the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, stated that due to poor wastewater infrastructure and sewage leakage, groundwater in the Lekki axis is at high risk of contamination. He emphasized that untreated borehole water could pose serious health risks and may be laced with harmful bacteria from sewage systems.
The warning underscores the urgent need for improved sanitation and water treatment systems in rapidly developing areas like Lekki, where unregulated borehole drilling is common.
